I love tulips…

18 January, 2010

Tulips are on my top ten list of favorite flowers. This time of the year when it’s bitter cold outside, tulips just warm my soul.
Tulips are botanically known as Tulipa & are members of the Liliaceae family. Close flower relatives include lilies, lilies of the valley, Gloriosas, hyacinths, grape hyacinths & stars of Bethlehem.

Tulips are geotropic (affected by gravity) & phototropic (curve toward the light). This makes them challenging to arrange since they move & stretch in their vases.

After bringing home a bunch of tulips, give the stems a fresh cut with a sharp knife. Clean any debris that is there & place in 4-6 inches of of cold water that is mixed with  with a floral nutrient.  Non fluoridated water works best. Store away from direct sunlight & heat.

Depending on the variety cut tulips should last from 3-6 days. I’ve had some last longer.

Tulips are available year round due in pat to “ice tulip”‘ technology (bulbs are held in sustained cold to delay forcing & extend their availability). They are most abundant this time of the year.

Tulips are this weeks “Budget Bloom”….9.95 for a bunch of 10.
